In New York City, Vito McMullen and his wife, Elaine, go to Passover dinner at his in-law’s home, where his twenty-two-year-old son, Adam, is questioned about dropping out of college three months short of graduating with a Master’s degree in biology. During dinner, Adam receives a telephone call from his grandfather, Jessie, and Vito wonders why his estranged father is calling his son. Het gaat Lumet om de soms moeizame verhouding tussen drie generaties sympathieke criminelen. Connery is het leukst. Hij spot met smaak over de lengte van zijn zoon (Hoffman is een 'onderdeurtje'), hij geeft kleinzoonlief college over het verschil tussen legale en moreel verwerpelijke diefstal (van andermans ellende profiteer je niet) en hij vertelt tussen de bedrijven door over het vrolijke, semi-criminele verleden.
