At Star Wars Celebration 2025, we received an update on the progress of Shawn Levy's Star Wars film. After several rumors and casting talks, Ryan Gosling will officially star in the new Star Wars film from Shawn Levy. Better yet, the film also got an official title and release date, and Star Wars: Starfighter is now set to debut on May 28, 2027. While at the convention, both Levy and Gosling lauded the new film as a wholly original Star Wars tale that embraces an era yet to be explored on the big screen. The film is already set to take place after the sequel trilogy, thought plot details apart from that are being kept under wraps.
Levy had spoken earlier on Star Wars this past year, during an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where host Josh Horowitz pressed him for details. "The experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about [what Star Wars is]," Levy shared. He acknowledged the challenge of creating something fresh within a universe that has revisited familiar timelines and themes so many times. "Because there's only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it's really forced me - because I don't want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie."
Levy, who has a reputation for blending heartfelt character moments with visual spectacle, offered a glimpse into his vision for the film. "I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters," he explained. "So I think that there is - there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment, that's Star Wars to me."
The Expanding Star Wars Universe
Levy’s project is just one part of the ever-expanding Star Wars universe, with Disney and Lucasfilm working on a slate of new films and series. The next major film in the franchise, The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau, is slated for release on May 22, 2026. Additionally, James Mangold is developing a Jedi origin story set thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct a film featuring the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey.
Levy’s busy schedule doesn’t stop at a galaxy far, far away. He remains heavily involved in the production of Netflix's Stranger Things, where he serves as an executive producer. The hit series is currently in production for its final season, and with a recent first-look photo from the set, fans are buzzing with anticipation. It’s expected that work on Levy’s Star Wars film will ramp up significantly once his commitments to Stranger Things wind down.
Star Wars: Starfighter will fly into theaters on May 28, 2027. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
